Pafra Adhesives’ Commitment to Energy Reduction

The production of PVA adhesives for the packaging, board converting and wood laminating industries requires huge amounts of energy.
For years, Pafra Adhesives had been using electricity because that was all that was available to us. We used overnight Economy 7 electricity to run storage heaters for the offices and laboratory and heat the process water for PVA production.

Oil-fired air heaters were used to keep the factory and warehouse at a suitable temperature to preserve the life of our adhesives (they can’t be allowed to drop below 5° centigrade). This was far from ideal as electricity is expensive and through winter, we had to have regular oil deliveries – all of which added to a negative impact on the environment.

Recently, Pafra Adhesives switched to gas-fired heaters for all our requirements. We applied for a Carbon Trust loan, approved on the very last day of their operation. Most unusually, we were granted 100% of the cost because of the strength of our case. Changing from electricity to gas saves 65,000 tonnes of CO2 production every year! We also keep a number of oil lorries off the roads. T W Ward Boilers Ltd of Sheffield was appointed for the installation of Pafra Adhesives’ new heating systems.

Pafra Adhesives have also invested in a new, energy efficient roof for the factory and offices with work overseen by Garland UK Ltd.

In total, Pafra Adhesives have invested over £250,000 in these projects, demonstrating our commitment to the environment and helping to keep the production cost of PVA adhesives down.
